This is a review of the abridged cd audio edition of Simple Genius by David Baldacci and read by Ron McLarty. Simple Genius is part of the Sean King and Michelle Maxwell series of books. It is is a follow-up to the Hour Game.
The Plot
The story starts with Michelle reaching rock bottom and, after picking a fight with the largest man she can find with the purpose of pursuing a death wish, she finds herself in a mental hospital. Sean King, meanwhile needs to find a case that will allow him to look after Michelle's bills and to keep the business on a secure financial footing. The case that he takes is an investigation into the suspicious death of a scientist. Through out the plot, the roots of Michelle's unhappiness are explored and woven into the story.
This is an enjoyable listen and, at just over six hours, is a good book for a journey or vacation. The story combines the suspense of the investigation with the added dimension of Michelle and her deep rooted emotional issues. Much of the plot takes place in Babbage Town, a contemporary version of Bletchley Park, where codes were broken during World War II. The connection with Bletchley Park is examined throughout the plot and this may be the reason why some readers of Simple Genius feel that David Baldacci pays a nod to the adventure stories from days gone by.

The Narration
Interestingly the abridged edition of Simple Genius is narrated by a different reader to the unabridged version. Ron McLarty is the reader of the abridged version and Scott Brick is the reader of the unabridged version. Books with both male and female main characters can be difficult to narrate. The narrator, whether female or male, has to voice the opposite sex throughout the book and depending on how this is done this can be difficult to sustain effectively. Ron Mclarty uses his excellent narration skills to bring life to all the main characters effectively without any of them feeling contrived. There is occasional use of music which builds the atmosphere at appropriate points.
The Abridgment
Simple Genius is abridged from over thirteen hours to just over six. Therefore the plot has been significantly streamlined. This major abridgment isn't apparent when listening to the audiobook, although listeners may wonder why some apparently big issues appear to be just gently touched upon. This does not detract from the enjoyment of the audiobook.
The abridged audiobook is a good listen. The cds also contain a map of the area which will help listeners to visualize where different aspects of the plot take place.
